Mac battery management app with a charge limit
For Mac battery management without an extra app, macOS Tahoe 26.4 or later on Apple silicon has a Charge Limit: open System Settings › Battery, click the Info button next to Charging and choose 80% to 100%. Battery Charge Limit also goes down to 50%, pauses charging while the Mac sleeps and works from macOS 14.2 Sonoma.

What Battery Charge Limit does
The problem
Plugged in all day, a MacBook sits at 100%, and a lithium-ion battery kept full wears out faster. Before macOS Tahoe 26.4 there's no fixed limit, only Optimized Battery Charging, which decides for itself when to hold back at 80%. Tahoe's Charge Limit starts at 80%.
With Battery Charge Limit
Charging stops at the level you choose, such as 80% or 60%, and stays there while you're plugged in. Your Mac runs on the charger's power, and the battery rests.
- Choose your limitStop charging at 50, 60, 70, 75, 80, 85, 90 or 95%, or pick 100% for no limit. Charging starts again when the battery drops 3 percent below it.
- Full when you need itGoing on a trip? Click Charge to 100% This Once, and the limit comes back by itself once the battery is full or you unplug.
- Works around the clockThe limit keeps working while MrFixable is closed and after a restart, and charging pauses while your Mac sleeps, so the battery can't creep up to 100% overnight.
Good to know
On macOS Tahoe 26.4 or later with Apple silicon, the built-in Charge Limit may be all you need: it needs no helper, but its lowest setting is 80%.
Needs a small helper that you approve once in System Settings › General › Login Items & Extensions, because only a helper with administrator rights can turn charging off. MrFixable shows you where.
For MacBooks. If your Mac doesn't let apps control charging, MrFixable tells you.
Switch it off and your Mac charges normally again, and the helper is removed.
