MrFixable

AlDente alternative for Mac

AlDente is a menu bar app that stops a MacBook charging at a level you choose. MrFixable’s Battery Charge Limit is an AlDente alternative for that core job: it holds the charge at 50% to 95%, charges to 100% once when you ask, and pauses charging while your Mac sleeps. AlDente has more battery tools.

What AlDente is

AlDente, by AppHouseKitchen, is a menu bar app that limits how far a MacBook battery charges, so it spends less time full. AlDente Free includes the charge limiter and Discharge, which lets your MacBook run entirely on battery while it’s plugged in. AlDente Pro adds Automatic Discharge, Heat Protection (charging pauses when the battery gets too hot), Sailing Mode, Top Up, Calibration Mode, MagSafe LED control and Apple Shortcuts support. Its pricing page lists Pro at €11.49 a year or €23.99 for a lifetime license, or as part of a Setapp subscription at $9.99 a month. It supports macOS 12 Monterey to macOS 27, on Apple silicon and most Intel MacBooks from 2013 on. Apple has also added a Charge Limit of its own: on macOS Tahoe 26.4 or later with Apple silicon, you can choose 80% to 100% in System Settings › Battery.

Where each one is better

AlDente is better for
  • It has many more battery tools: Discharge runs the Mac on battery while it’s plugged in, and Pro adds Heat Protection, Sailing Mode, Calibration Mode, MagSafe LED control and Apple Shortcuts support.
  • AlDente Free gives you a charge limit at no cost.
  • It supports older systems, from macOS 12 Monterey, and lists the Intel MacBooks it works with.
MrFixable is better for
  • Charging to 100% once, pausing charging while the Mac sleeps and keeping the limit with the app closed are all included in one $19.99 payment, with no yearly plan.
  • It goes lower than macOS’s own Charge Limit: down to 50%, where Apple’s setting starts at 80%. And it works on macOS 14.2 Sonoma and macOS 15 Sequoia, where Apple’s setting doesn’t exist.
  • It comes with 67 other fixes, such as clipboard history, window snapping and per-app volume, for the same price.
  • Switch it off and your Mac charges normally again, and the helper is removed.
Choose AlDente if
People who want every battery option: running on battery while plugged in, heat protection, a charge range with Sailing Mode, or calibration, and people on macOS 12 or 13.
Choose MrFixable if
People who want a simple charge limit that holds, also overnight, plus a one-time top-up for trips, and who will use some of MrFixable’s other fixes.

Switching from AlDente

Turn off AlDente’s charge limit and quit AlDente first, so two apps aren’t switching charging on and off at the same time. Remove it if you no longer need it. Then turn on Battery Charge Limit in MrFixable and approve its helper once in System Settings › General › Login Items & Extensions; MrFixable shows you where. The limit starts at 80%, and you can pick another level.

Questions

  • Can a Mac limit its battery charge without AlDente?

Yes, on macOS Tahoe 26.4 or later with Apple silicon. Open System Settings › Battery, click the info button next to Charging, and choose a Charge Limit from 80% to 100%. Earlier versions only have Optimized Battery Charging. Battery Charge Limit also goes down to 50% and works from macOS 14.2 Sonoma.
  • Is AlDente free?

Partly. AlDente Free includes the charge limiter and Discharge. Top Up, Heat Protection, Sailing Mode, Calibration Mode and stopping charging while the Mac sleeps are in AlDente Pro, listed at €11.49 a year or €23.99 for a lifetime license. MrFixable costs $19.99 once for 68 fixes, with a 14-day free trial.
  • Does Battery Charge Limit work while my Mac sleeps?

Yes. MrFixable’s helper pauses charging when your Mac goes to sleep and checks the limit again when it wakes, so the battery can’t creep up to 100% overnight. It also keeps the limit while MrFixable is closed. In AlDente, both of these are Pro features, and AlDente Free can’t control charging during sleep.
  • Can I use AlDente and MrFixable together?

Yes, but use only one charge limit. Two apps switching charging on and off would get in each other’s way, so turn off the limit in one of them. If you need AlDente’s Discharge or Heat Protection, keep AlDente for the battery and use MrFixable for its other fixes.
