Keep a window always on top on Mac
macOS has no always on top setting for Mac windows. Picture in Picture floats some videos, and that's all. With Pin Window on Top, press ⌃⌥P in any window and a live view of it stays above your other apps while you work. Click it to use the real window, and press ⌃⌥P again to unpin it.

What Pin Window on Top does
The problem
Click another app and the window you were watching disappears behind it: a video, your notes, a chat, a build log. Some video players have Picture in Picture, but macOS has no setting to keep any other window on top.
With Pin Window on Top
Press ⌃⌥P and the window you're in stays visible above everything while you work in other apps, playing live. Click it to use it, and press ⌃⌥P again to unpin it.
- One shortcut⌃⌥P pins or unpins the front window, and a small notice confirms it. Change the shortcut in settings, and MrFixable marks it if another app already uses it.
- Live, not a snapshotWhile something covers the real window, a live picture of it floats on top at the same size and place, with a pin badge. Videos keep playing and logs keep scrolling.
- Click to go to itClick the pinned window to bring the real one forward and use it. Pin as many windows as you like, and unpin any of them from the MrFixable menu or the fix's settings.
Good to know
Needs Accessibility access to find the window you're in, and Screen Recording, which macOS requires for an app to show a live picture of another app's window.
macOS doesn't let one app raise another app's window above everything, so the floating window is a live picture. To type or scroll in it, click it first.
Pins end when the window closes, its app quits or you quit MrFixable. While the app is hidden or the window is minimized, nothing floats.
Switch it off and every pin is removed.
Questions
How do I keep a window on top on a Mac?
Turn on Pin Window on Top in MrFixable. Then click in the window you want to keep and press ⌃⌥P (Control-Option-P). A small notice confirms it. Work in any other app and the window stays visible on top, playing live. Press ⌃⌥P in it again to unpin it. macOS has no built-in setting for this. How do I pin a window to the front on a Mac?
Open MrFixable, turn on Pin Window on Top, then click the window and press ⌃⌥P. It stays in front of your other apps until you press ⌃⌥P again, close the window or quit MrFixable. To use different keys, set your own shortcut in the fix's settings. Every pinned window is listed in the MrFixable menu.Is there an always on top app for Mac?
Yes, but macOS doesn't include one, so you need an app for it. Pin Window on Top is one of the 68 fixes in MrFixable, a menu bar app for macOS 14.2 Sonoma or later. It costs $19.99 once for a lifetime license, and you can try every fix free for 14 days. Can I watch a video while I work in another app?
Yes. Pin the video's window with ⌃⌥P and it keeps playing on top while you work somewhere else. Picture in Picture does something similar for videos only, in a small window you move to a corner. A pinned window stays at its own size and place, and works for any window, not only videos. Can I type in a pinned window?
Click it first. The floating window is a live picture, and the click takes you to the real window, where you can type and scroll as usual. When you switch back to another app, the picture floats on top again. This is because macOS doesn't let one app raise another app's window above everything. Can I pin more than one window?
Yes. Pin as many windows as you like, each with ⌃⌥P. Every pinned window is listed in the MrFixable menu and in the fix's settings, each with an Unpin button. A pin ends by itself when its window closes or its app quits, and all pins end when you quit MrFixable. Why does Pin Window on Top need Screen Recording?
macOS doesn't let one app raise another app's window above everything. So MrFixable shows a live picture of the window on top, and macOS asks for Screen Recording permission before any app can show a picture of another app's window. Accessibility access is needed too, to find the window you're in.
