What AltTab is

AltTab is a free, open-source window switcher (GPL-3.0) that brings Windows-style Alt-Tab to the Mac. It shows a preview of each window, including minimized and hidden windows and windows on other Spaces, with a badge showing where each one is, and its shortcuts can be customized. AltTab Pro adds search, more styles, auto-size and extra shortcuts, for $9.99 once with updates for the current major version, or $24.99 for Pro Lifetime. Pro can be tried free for 14 days. AltTab runs on macOS 12 or later, on Apple silicon and Intel.

Switching from AltTab

Quit AltTab, and if it opens at login, remove it in System Settings › General › Login Items & Extensions, so two apps don't react to the same keys. Then turn on Window Switcher in MrFixable and allow Accessibility access. For window previews, also allow MrFixable in System Settings › Privacy & Security › Screen & System Audio Recording.

Questions

  • Is AltTab free?

Yes. AltTab is free and open source, and its core features stay free. AltTab Pro adds search, more styles and extra shortcuts for $9.99 once, or $24.99 for Pro Lifetime, with a 14-day free trial. MrFixable costs $19.99 once, and Window Switcher is one of its 68 fixes.
  • Does Window Switcher show minimized windows?

No. Window Switcher lists the open windows on your current desktop only, so minimized windows and windows on other desktops aren't included. AltTab shows those too, with a badge, so it's the better choice if you minimize a lot or work across several desktops.
  • Can I change the Window Switcher shortcut?

No. Window Switcher always opens with ⌥Tab, which is Alt-Tab on a Windows keyboard. Tab or the arrow keys move along, ⇧Tab goes back, ↩ or letting go of ⌥ switches, and ⎋ cancels. ⌘Tab keeps switching apps as usual. AltTab lets you customize its shortcuts.
  • Can I use AltTab and MrFixable together?

Yes, as long as they don't share a shortcut. Either switch Window Switcher off in MrFixable and keep AltTab, or give AltTab a shortcut other than ⌥Tab. MrFixable's other fixes, like Window Snapping and Dock Window Previews, work alongside AltTab as usual.
